The long story is that there are some other things that will need to be changed, so having access to a parts truck makes it a lot easier. The swap is well documented here and many have been done successfully. If the noise changes or disappears, the noise may be amplified by the vibration of the engine. Drive under the same condition again. Press the clutch pedal in and shift into neutral. Release the clutch while the truck is coasting down the road. When I put the ZF5 into my '85, I originally tried to use the tunnel cover from an '81 Bronco, which already had a manual transmission. The ZF5 hit the cover and wouldn't let it sit flat.
