Step 1. Expose hidden set screws. A set screw is typically installed along the base of the lock on the interior side of the door. It may be hidden behind a circular plate around the lever. This plate is known as a rose and can almost always be removed by hand. Try twisting or pulling the rose away from the door to expose the screws.
As long as your door is only 1 3/8" it can be 1/2" shorter. Do not get them too long or the screw will bottom out before the handle is drawn tight. My guess is a 10/24 round head screw 1 1/4" long. The head may be too big to fit in the recess, since it will not be the original screws. They may be ground on a bit to get them to fit, in a pinch. –Rotate the key 90 degrees clockwise. Insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey hole. You may feel the tool click inside the lock. Remove the SmarKey tool. Remove the current key. Insert the new key you wish to use with the lock. Make sure your key is FULLY inserted. The edge of the key touches the indent in the cylinder face.If you are experiencing the lever falling off, the set screw is still in the shaft. If you remove the lever and on one side of the shaft there is a hole and the other side there is a silver button. That silver button is the set screw. Place the lever back on to the shaft, using a 3/32 hex wrench tighten the screw through the lever and shaft.;Turning the spindle is the same as turning the door knob. Since grip is a problem, use pliers to turn the spindle. If you don't have pliers, use a clothespin or two keys rubber-banded together. If no spindle is available to turn, place an item in the latch's square or small rectangular hole. Use a screwdriver, spoon handle, nail file, or key.
On my 264 deadbolt, the door can be locked with the Kwikset button, but the User Code will not unlock the door. Make sure the User Code is correct and that the Kwikset button is pushed after entering the User Code. If the door still won't unlock, use a key to unlock the door.
